It
is said the best California merlot comes from Sonoma County. The
first to produce it commercially was Louis Martini in Napa County,
followed by Clos Du Bois in Sonoma, Veedercrest in Napa, and some
say Leonetti Cellars (http://www.leonetticellars.com/leohistory.html)
in Washington makes the best. You won't find it anywhere, and it
will take you three years to get on their mailing list. It certainly
is delicious. Duckhorn in St. Helena is my favorite, although I
have been collecting Mantanzas Creek merlot for years. It becomes
harder and harder to obtain, and getting reserves even by visiting
the winery is difficult. Their open house is the best time to go.
It
is off the beaten winery track, but worth a visit. Sue and I have
gone here several times, bringing lunch with us. The times we were
there, we were the only ones enjoying the grounds. I put the wine
away by the case for a minimum of five years.
